Terms of Service for Detect Edge
Effective Date: October 9, 2026
1. Agreement to Terms
These Terms of Service are an agreement between you and Detect Labs, LLC ("Detect Labs," "we," "us," or "our"). By using the Detect Edge apps, websites, and services (the "service"), you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data.
2. The Service
Detect Edge lets you build detectors from sensor data. With a supported device, such as the Nordic Thingy:53, you can record examples, train machine learning models, run them on the device, and be notified of what they detect. The service also offers shared models and community campaigns that collect open data, and it can connect to other services you choose, such as Edge Impulse or Home Assistant.
The service is under active development. We may add, change, or remove features, and we will give notice of changes that significantly reduce what you can do with data you have already collected.
3. Accounts, Limits, and Pricing
- Your Account: You are responsible for your account credentials and for activity under your account. You must be old enough to form a binding contract where you live, and at least 13.
- Limits: Accounts have usage limits, including a storage quota for recordings (currently 10MB on the free tier). We may change limits with notice.
- Pricing: The service is currently free. If we introduce paid plans, we will tell you before anything you use becomes chargeable, and you will not be charged without agreeing to it.
4. Your Data and Our Property
- Your Data Is Yours: You keep ownership of the sensor recordings, labels, and project information you create with the service ("your data"), and you may export your recordings at any time.
- Private by Default: You grant us a limited license to host, process, and transmit your data solely to provide the service to you: for example, to store it, check its quality, train and run your models, and deliver your detections. We do not publish your data, sell it, or use it to build shared datasets or shared models, unless you choose to contribute recordings under Section 5.
- Your Models: Models trained only from your data are for you to use with the service and on your devices.
- Our Property: Detect Labs retains all rights in the service itself, including its software, design, logos, and trademarks, and in the shared models it provides, except where we publish something under an open license.
- Feedback: If you send us suggestions, we may use them without obligation to you.
5. Contributing Recordings (Optional)
You may choose to contribute recordings so they can be published as open data and used to build shared models. Contributing is optional. You contribute only by joining a campaign or by turning on "Contribute recordings" in the app, each of which tells you what it covers. The Privacy Policy describes what is copied and what is left out.
- What You Agree To: While you are contributing, Detect Labs may review the recordings that are covered and make copies, with identifying details removed, of the ones it selects ("Contributed Copies"). With "Contribute recordings" turned on, the recordings covered are those in your projects, including recordings made before you turned it on.
- Open License: You agree that Detect Labs may publish Contributed Copies, alone or as part of datasets, under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0), and you grant Detect Labs a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, and irrevocable license to store, copy, modify, publish, and use Contributed Copies for that purpose and to develop, train, test, and improve models and the service. CC BY 4.0 lets anyone use the published data, including commercially, as long as they give credit.
- Credit: Contributed Copies are published without your name. You agree that credit to "Detect Edge contributors" satisfies any attribution owed to you.
- It Cannot Be Undone: These permissions continue for Contributed Copies that have already been made if you stop contributing, delete the original recording or project, or delete your account, or if your account is terminated. Published data cannot be recalled. Stopping prevents further recordings from being selected.
- Models and Datasets: Detect Labs may publish the datasets it compiles from Contributed Copies, and models trained on them, under CC BY 4.0, and may make them available to all users.
- No Payment: You are not entitled to payment or other compensation for contributing.
- Your Responsibility: Contribute only recordings you have the right to share, that were collected lawfully and without violating anyone's privacy rights, and that do not contain personal information in the details you enter. We may decline or stop using any contribution.
6. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Use the service for any illegal or unauthorized purpose.
- Use the service to monitor people without their knowledge, or in a way that violates their privacy rights or any law that requires their consent.
- Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or extract the source code of the service, except where we have published it under an open license.
- Interfere with the service, or access data that is not yours.
- Exceed or circumvent the usage limits that apply to your account.
7. Devices and Firmware
The service works with hardware made by third parties. The app can install firmware and models on your device. You are responsible for your device, and we are not responsible for damage to hardware, including from firmware updates, except where the law does not allow us to exclude that responsibility.
8. Third-Party Services
The service can send your data to third-party services that you choose to use, such as Edge Impulse or Home Assistant, and you can sign in with third-party accounts such as Google or Apple. We are not responsible for the availability, security, or functionality of third-party services. Your use of them is governed by their own terms.
9. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability
- Not a Safety System: Detectors can miss events and can report events that did not happen, and notifications can be delayed or fail to arrive. Do not rely on the service for safety, security, medical, or emergency purposes, or anywhere a missed or false detection could cause harm or damage.
- "As-Is" Basis: The service, including models, shared models, and published datasets, is provided "as-is" and "as-available." We make no warranties regarding accuracy, reliability, or fitness for a particular purpose.
- Model Performance: You are responsible for deciding whether a model is good enough for how you use it. We are not responsible for the performance or accuracy of any model, whether trained from your data or provided by us.
- Limitation of Liability: To the maximum extent permitted by law, Detect Labs, LLC shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service.
10. Ending Your Use
You may stop using the service at any time and delete your account with the in-app "Delete Account" feature. Deleting your account permanently removes your private data from our systems as described in the Privacy Policy. It does not remove Contributed Copies made under Section 5 or data you sent to third-party services.
We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these terms. If we end the service, we will give you reasonable notice so you can export your data.
11. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms as the service changes. We will post the new terms here with a new effective date and notify you of significant changes in the app or by email. If you keep using the service after a change takes effect, you accept the new terms. A change to these terms does not make recordings in your private projects public: contributing always requires your choice.
12. Governing Law
These terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict of law principles.
